The British citizenship test

There is no separate citizenship exam: the test people call the British citizenship test is the Life in the UK test. Passing it is one of the requirements to become a British citizen by naturalisation.

Who needs to take it

Most adults applying for British citizenship or for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) need a pass. If you passed it for settlement, you do not take it again for citizenship. People under 18, aged 65 or over, or with a long-term physical or mental condition are exempt.

The test format

24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, on a computer at an approved test centre in the UK. You need 18 correct answers (75%) to pass. The questions come only from the handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.

The other citizenship requirements

The test is only one part of the application. For naturalisation you usually also need to have lived in the UK for 5 years, have held indefinite leave to remain or settled status for 12 months, prove your knowledge of English and be of good character. Check the current rules and fees before you apply: gov.uk/apply-citizenship-indefinite-leave-to-remain

How to book the test

Book only on the government website, at least 3 days ahead. The fee is £50. We do not book tests and we are not the government: gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test

How to prepare

Read the handbook chapter by chapter, then take timed mock tests in the real format until you reach the pass mark several times in a row. Our free practice test uses the same number of questions, time limit and pass mark, and explains every answer.
