The Life in the UK test for indefinite leave to remain
If you are applying for settlement (indefinite leave to remain, ILR), you may need to pass the Life in the UK test. It is the same test used for citizenship: 24 questions, 45 minutes, pass mark 75%.

Do you need it for ILR?
The government says you may need the test to settle in the UK. Whether it applies to you depends on your visa route, so check the guidance for your route before you apply. We do not give advice about individual cases. gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test
Who is exempt
You do not need to take it if you are under 18, aged 65 or over, have already passed it, or have a long-term physical or mental condition supported by an exemption form or a doctor's letter.
One pass for settlement and citizenship
When you pass, you get a unique reference number that you use in your application. If you passed the test for settlement, you do not take it again when you later apply for citizenship.
English is a separate requirement
The Life in the UK test is not an English test. For ILR and citizenship, adults usually also have to prove their English, with an approved test at level B1 or above or a degree taught in English. gov.uk/english-language
