The Life in the UK handbook
Every question in the Life in the UK test comes from one book: Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents, 3rd edition. Nothing outside it is tested.
This is an independent practice website. We are not the government and are not affiliated with any official body. To book your test, use the official website: gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test
Which edition
The current handbook is the 3rd edition. Check the edition before you buy a second-hand copy or a summary: study the current one.
Formats
It is sold as a paperback, an eBook and an audiobook. There is also an official study guide sold separately, which supports the handbook but does not replace it.
What is in it
The handbook covers the values and principles of the UK, what the UK is, its long history from early Britain to the present, modern society (religion, festivals, sport, arts) and the UK government, the law and your role as a resident. The history chapter is full of dates and names, so give it extra time.
How to study it
Read it once from start to finish, then switch to timed practice tests. Use your wrong answers to choose which chapters to re-read. Dates, numbers and names (monarchs, battles, laws, percentages) are the hardest to remember, so review them in short sessions.
Our questions
Our questions are written by us from the facts in the handbook; we do not copy its text and the government does not publish an official question bank. Each answer explains the fact behind it, so you learn the material and not just the question.
